13 Picture Summary: Spring 2013

1. Mardi Gras

I went to New Orleans for Mardi Gras and got the full experience. From getting my phone and wallet stolen, to a few hand grenades, beignets for breakfast, some voodoo shops and even some shots fired on Bourbon Street.

2. D-NOW

Disciple Now is always a fun time to return to the church I attended in high school, worship and lead students, see old friends, eat junk food and dive into the Word for an entire weekend. 

3. Spring Break in Destin

Friends from Mississippi State and Ole Miss found a way to come together to share a condo on the beach in Destin, FL. We braved the cooler temperatures and enjoyed laying on the rocks at a place we deemed 'Mermaid Island', nights out at Baytowne, Krispy Kreme and a paint party.

4. Working at Della Davidson

 

I spent about 200 hours at this 4^th and 5^th grade school in Oxford this semester, tutoring students in math as part of my 300 hour volunteer commitment with College Corps. I really enjoyed my time there and met some of the best teachers and funniest kids.

5. Spring Parties

 

Sarah came into town for Sigma Nu's spring party this year and we took a bus to Castle Hill Resort dressed like rednecks for crawfish, a band and free drinks.

6. Baseball Games

From beer showers after home runs to Hotty Toddy cheers, Ole Miss baseball is one of my favorite parts of spring.

7. Double Decker Festival

Double Decker weekend is always a fun weekend in Oxford. From live music, terrible traffic, the craft fair, rides on the Double Decker bus and carnival food, it is always a good time!

8. Engaged in Orange Beach, AL

Biggest life event thus far. He put a ring on it!

9. SEC Championship

HOTTY FREAKING TODDY! After going to nearly every home game and watching the away ones around Oxford, I was stoked to see my Rebels win!!

10. Visitors

 

 

High school friend Sarah, cousins Avery and Payton, Matthew and fellow USAFA girlfriend Alex came to visit Lauren and I at the cottage this semester!

12. The Lake

I got to to to the lake a few times to visit the fam, fish with my dad and relax!

13. Cottage Love

Our cottage neighbors have become a little family and I love every single one of them and their dogs!

15 Picture Summary: Fall 2012

1.) Fostering puppies

Chance, Macy, Wendy, Dallas, Lily, Sophie, Hudson, Ally, Watson, Piglet, Diesel and Socks made my semester. I love puppies. As anyone who follows me on facebook, twitter or instagram knows, I had the opportunity to foster these 12 puppies for the Oxford Lafayette Humane Society this semester and I genuinely loved every single second of it! Letting them go is always hard, but knowing they have a good home makes it all worthwhile!

2.) College Corps

 College Corps is a minimum requirement 300-hour volunteer program that has recently consumed my life! I work at Della Davidson Elementary School in Oxford tutoring 4^th and 5^th grade math and I really do enjoy it. Although it is challenging sometimes, I have recently become more interested in public health and school nutrition intervention so I am confident that it is worth putting so much time into working with these kids.

3.) Living room makeover

My lovely uncle decided Lauren and I should feel at home in our new cottage and let us give our living room a makeover! We had so much fun visiting tons of furniture stores, sitting on what felt like thousands of couches and finally putting everything together. We love it!

4.) First Ole Miss football season

It wasn't my first experience in the Grove, but I sure do love Ole Miss football game days! It helped that we were much better this year than in the past! Cody got to come to the Egg Bowl with me over Thanksgiving Break and we won!! Hotty Toddy!

5.) Parents weekend (Aug. 30-Sept. 3)

Shortly after the semester started, I made my way to Colorado with Cody's family for my 3^rd Parents' Weekend. We got to spend our 5 year anniversary together, I went to some of his classes, we tailgated before the football game, celebrated Blake's 22^nd birthday with a cookout, drove to the mountains and went fly fishing. His family rented a house and as always, it was a really good time.

6.) Hanging out with Landon

I was living in Colorado when this little joker was born, but it has been really nice to be able to see him start to grow up and start walking! His momma and aunt are pretty cool too :)

7.) Weekends at the farm

What is really nice about Ole Miss is that it is about 30 minutes from the farm, where you can find most of my family every weekend in the fall! My favorite things were jumping on hay bales with Lauren, the 3^rd annual shootout, riding fourwheelers, deer hunting with Cody, shooting my new .38 special and letting my puppies run free!

8.) Colorado for Cody's birthday (October 5-8)

Cody's friends at USAFA paid for my flight to come spend his birthday weekend with them in Colorado. Blake picked me up from the airport and took me to Cody's room to surprise him. We somehow kept it from him for a few months, which is a miracle in it of itself. We had a really fun weekend camping and fishing. They even wakeboarded in 30 degree weather…crazies. 

9.) My 21st birthday

The title says it all.

10.) Trip to Mississippi State (October 19-21)

I went to visit Kellerhouse and EK on a football weekend for my first time back to State since I went to school there….April 27, 2011. It was good to see old friends and we had fun in the cotton district and tailgating…sooo much catching up to do! I'm not going to hate but I am proud to be a Rebel! 

11.) Decorating the cottage

As soon as Lauren and I moved into our house, we couldn't wait for a holiday to come so we could decorate. My mom has a box of things for us for every holiday and we deck the cottage out! It has been so much fun living with Lauren and decorating our little cottage!

12.) Made it on MTV's: Pranked

 A few friends played a joke on Lauren and I awhile back by throwing a big frog down on our living room floor beside us one night and Lauren completely and totally flipped out. Someone from MTV got ahold of the video from youtube and we were aired in their Pranked, Season 5 in November!!

13.) Trip to Indiana (November 1-4)

Lauren and I road tripped for 12 hours across 5 states and through many corn fields to visit Alex at Indiana University! We enjoyed seeing Bloomington, staying in her sorority house, seeing what the frats were all about and playing in the mud at the football game. We picked up a couple of new favorite songs and treated ourselves to Lambert's on the way home! We're hoping to go back soon!

14.) Trip to Birmingham (December 1-2)

Lauren, Adam and I headed out to Birmingham for the weekend to surprise Sarah for her 21^st birthday! We decorated her apartment, pop, locked and dropped it, and somehow missed out on krispy kreme…what a shame.

15.) New Years Eve

 Cody and I successfully ended 2012 with an intense meal of ribs, baked beans, a baked potato and potato salad. I think it was the first time we had actually cooked together, and it wasn't a total disaster so things are looking good!

…apparently doesn’t exist to google, the county emergency services, any online map or AT&T. Having a brand new house in an all new neighborhood definitely has its perks and I am not complaining in the least but seeing as though the landlord and the mailman are the only important people that don’t question that you have the correct address, we definitely have a problem.

On another note, our house is awesome. Lauren and I got our keys on Monday and raced to the house in a four-runner Randy versus Edge Bubs battle…me and Bubs won. Duh. My parents came down with all of my things on a trailer on Tuesday and by Friday I just about had everything where I wanted it and decided to spend the day at the pool. Lauren got all moved in on Thursday…while Adam was taking an exam and working. I think we gained some muscles even though we saved her desk for him to put together! Girl power. The porch swing is definitely the best part of the house, with a rocking recliner from my uncle in a close second with this giraffe canvas right behind it.

 We ripped some guy off 2 rows over in our neighborhood that Lauren found on Craig’s List and got 4 barstools out of it…it worked out in our favor. He tried to give us some Marilyn Monroe things that apparently cause fights between him and his girlfriend but we declined and decided to stay out of that situation! We met a neighbor…Mary, and bought a kiddie pool for some intense backyard tanning sessions. We hope to meet more people but seeing as though a huge white kidnapper-looking van is in the driveway because it’s what Lauren used to bring her things down here, I don’t expect visitors to be lining up at the door just yet! 

Friday night we got some fish and I straightened my hair for the first time in 3 weeks, impressive I know. 

By fish, I mean 4 diverse goldfish, 3 shrimp and an algae eater. That should make 8 little critters hanging out in my tank. Wrong. I only have 7, one shrimp down. We’re hoping he is playing an intense game of hide and seek instead of dead on the floor, as we aren’t really sure if he made the transition from the bag to the tank…yikes. That’d be a new record…killing something within the first hour of having it. Great. I like the hide and seek idea better so we’ll stick with that. Also, they eat bloodworms…I’m not really sure what exactly what those are but maybe shrimp weren’t the best little pets for me. 

We might have another outside pet in the making though, since a cat wandered up on our walk around the neighborhood and followed us last night...which is exactly the way we acquired my cat in Olive Branch, Pixie. It was cute even though the picture makes it look like a demon. Only problem...I'm allergic to cats so I guess I'll just never touch it. God knows Lauren won't get within 5 feet of it. Cody went fly fishing this week and I’m really jealous. Mainly because I’ve never caught a trout and you get to stand in the water to fish but he said he’d take me sometime when I’m out there. Like in 33 days :) If you know someone selling a kayak, let me know. That’s in a close second behind how much I want a puppy.

I can’t believe summer is almost over! Seven states, an adventure to Colorado, my first time camping, the Tennessee River, way too much watermelon, beautiful sunsets, Lady Antebellum, a Harley and my motorcycle license, a surprise 21^st for Lauren, moved my life for the 4^th time in 2 short years, got my first house and had lots of ICEEs! 

Pretty successful summer, I’d say!

Day 5: Goodbyes Suck.

Our last day was hectic. We woke up, had chex mix for breakfast and packed everything in the bronco just to drive to a car wash to unpack it in order to super clean the interior and the outside. A can of root beet from Mississippi had exploded in the bronco because of the altitude and it was everywhere! It was terrible but after tons of scrubbing inside and out and $40 worth of cleaning supplies, Maria is clean and waxed. She is a lot more high maintenance than I am! Cody got a storage unit for some stuff off base and I had fun riding on the luggage cart while he pushed me! 

We could see the Waldo Canyon Fire in Colorado Springs for the first time and it was crazy! Cody got a call about 2pm that he was supposed to have already been back instead of arriving at 7, which is the normal check-in time so we left for Denver immediately to drop me off a little early, which I didn’t mind since I was excited to edit the pictures and get a blog post up, and I knew he had tons to do when he got back. I think Maria didn’t want me to leave because she caused us quite a bit of problems in the worst traffic in Denver…she got over it though. It was probably the hardest goodbye yet, we had such an amazing trip and I may have laughed more than I ever have. 

But, I boarded my delayed plane to Nashville and was greeted by my mom, and Cody made it back to USAFA after breaking down and life is back to normal I guess….except not. Cody is in Las Vegas for 3 weeks and is going to get to fly in an F-16….I may or may not be a little jealous. There are some things I wish we could trade places for haha but I’m excited to get my new house in Oxford in the next month with Laurs and enjoy this next month of summer before I start my intercession class in August.

DAY 4: Nice Guys and Crazy Mexicans

The next morning we pulled out a little after 7am and after stopping on top of a hill to get internet on my phone to figure out which way to go, we were finally headed north! This is when a map would have definitely come in handy. This was by far the longest day. After a breakdown or 2, some McDonald’s apple pies, synchronized dances, a lot of gas, the Beatles, some nice guys and crazy Mexicans, we made it to Lake Pueblo in Colorado around 4pm. That is a lot of driving. Since we didn’t make it where we were supposed to the day before, we just decided to bypass Zapata Falls and the Sand Dunes and save them for one of my trips to Colorado in the next 2 years. Right before we got back to the interstate, there was a mountain/large plateau that you could see for miles. 

Kidding, I told Cody we should try to climb it in the bronco and that is exactly what we did!

The nice thing is that when the bronco broke down on this trip, I mean literally just stopped going down the interstate when Cody was holding the gas down, Cody could fix it. No one really freaked out, we just turned the flashers on, pulled over, he got out with his tools and within 10 minutes, we were rolling again! I was quite impressed…I mean I know he built the thing but still :) Although after looking at this picture from when we broke down one time of absolutely nothing I probably should have worried a little...haha.

 After realizing there was nothing for another hour or more, we turned around and got gas then stopped at McDonald’s in Las Vegas, New Mexico so I could charge my camera and my computer some and Cody surprised me with sweet tea and an apple pie, my favorite!! At our many stops in New Mexico and southern Colorado, plenty of nice guys came up to talk to cody about the bronco and a couple of stops were filled with crazy Mexicans piling in and out of vans and driving like maniacs. 

We finally arrived at Lake Pueblo and it was so hot! I figured the first part of our trip would be super hot and as we got closer to Colorado, it’d cool down but I definitely got that backwards! As soon as we got to Lake Pueblo, we found the swim beach and slowly got in…it was freezing, but a really nice area! After that, we spent over an hour looking for a campsite by the water but they were all reserved by RVs so we decided to take a shower, hoping that it would cool down outside and be more bearable for tent camping. We walked in the separated showers and walked out of the different sides of the building at the same time laughing…it was coin operated. So after finding some quarters and taking cold 3 minute showers we still weren’t satisfied with almost 100 degree temps at 7pm. 

It went like this…"We could go eat with Blake and get a hotel…air conditioning…a soft bed…real food…” 

He had me at eat, haha. So, we headed to the Springs, which is a little over an hour north, found a hotel, checked in at 8:48 and literally ran up and down too many flights of stairs taking all of our camping stuff up to the 3^rd floor and changed clothes in order to make it to Cheddar’s in time for dinner with Blake and Kayla at 9pm. We were one minute late and I was exhausted. 

DAY 3: What kind of Jeep is that?

Luckily, it stopped raining by morning and the tent was dry for the most part. Cody made bacon and sausage and cheese biscuits with hot chocolate for breakfast…in the woods none the less. I think I have a keeper :) It was a cool morning after the rain, which was really nice waking up to and I slept so good. I think we truly got lucky with the weather…until we got to Colorado. So we packed up around 8am and headed west again! We hit up 3 states in one day and it was my first time to go to Texas and New Mexico! 

When we got off the interstate to get gas, a man pulled off with us and followed us to the gas station to tell him how much he liked it and ask if Cody would sell Maria. Without hesitation, Cody said no and the man moved along only for the man behind us to ask tons of questions, like “What kind of Jeep is that?” That was definitely Cody’s favorite question and I couldn’t help but cringe and laugh everytime. It turned out his son went to Ole Miss…as if I couldn’t have guessed that with his chacos, button up, mountain hardwear vest, croakies and southern tide visor…for a road trip. Sounds about right. We moved into Texas at a swift rate of 60mph and continued west, stopping at a rest stop that had a sign to beware of rattlesnakes…yikes!, and having some somersausage and cheese at a picnic area right off the interstate. Cody checked the bronco about everytime we stopped and this time he found an oil leak so he tightened some bearings and told me to find the nearest campground. 

We saw a sign for Ute Lake in New Mexico and followed the signs to it…kind of. After running way too low on gas, my phone took us to this gas station….we about died when we saw it.

 It was like a horror movie, especially since we only passed about 5 cars, some cows and a ton of “Ranch” signs on the way in, with no houses, water, buildings or many people. Not to mention we lost all cell service for awhile, we weren’t at the campground we had originally planned so no one knew where we were and we had to guess how to get in and out of there. Once we arrived, we set the tent up and took a nap. Well, Cody set the tent up. I, like an idiot, tried to get in his bronco by jumping so I wouldn’t get my wet and muddy feet all over the floorboard after we went down by the lake. Obviously underestimating how high I could jump, I smacked my head on the roof and still didn’t make it in the bronco…I felt so dumb, haha. Long story short, I just chilled out while he played superman and set everything up. Besides that, Ute Lake was really neat. Even though we couldn’t camp by the water, we could drive the bronco out away from the campground to the water’s edge and we were really close to the bathrooms/showers. 

The wind blew most of the time there and it wasn’t too hot so that was really nice. Cody also caught a smallmouth bass so that made his night and we got some pretty sweet pictures of Maria! We watched the sunset over the lake, as we did at all of the other campsites and it was truly majestic…definitely one of my favorite parts of this trip. 





Even after staying there, we still don’t know how to pronounce Ute right…I say “ooot” and Cody says “ewtee” hahaha…who knows!  We fell asleep and woke up to raccoons on top of the bronco. I know they would have been dead if there wouldn’t have been other people camping nearby! They didn’t do any damage though, thank goodness!
